Prentice Hall Literature (short stories) - this will be new for next year and will cross with the writing curriculum, for example it will incorporate comparing and contrasting written pieces of work

I used to use Hatchet by Gary Paulsen, but I don't think I will next year since I am going to try to build the students' reading skills using their independent reading books instead.
In literature circles, the students are allowed to choose their second books for the marking period. Some of their choices in the past have been: The Candymakers by Wendy Mass, My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult, The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, Lord of the Flies by William Golding, and Monster by Walter Dean Myers.
